In January we became members of this exclusive club.
As we entered the chambers of the Palace where the instruments are housed, we walked past the empty display cases labelled with the details of each of them, our anticipation mounting as we realized they had been removed for our use! Our first sighting of the instruments was laid out in beautiful antique cases on a huge mahogony table, the cello mounted on a stand. Everything shone. The wood caught the light in the most magical way, the ornate decoration was immaculate and astonishing. That these instruments have remained intact for 400 years, through political upheaval, wars and all manner of modernization around them is quite amazing.
The guardian of the collection, who stayed with us tenaciously through each of our rehearsal sessions, pointed out the precautions taken to keep them in such great condition whilst allowing them to be played. The cello wears a felt collar around the shoulders for all but the actual performance, the viola must be played without touching the ribs, more delicate as the decoration is painted rather than inlaid as is the case with the violins. This was quite a challenge as we were performing works of 20th century British composers who quite often call for the viola to play in the high registers! Paul tried his best to respect the request, but we all found it was all too easy to forget the magnitude of this collection as one felt so much at home playing them. The sound was warm and inviting, the blend between the four a joy to behold, yet there was a sense that they projected with a clarity all string players aspire to and rarely find. It was indeed a huge privilege to live amongst these treasures for a short time.

Before the concert we all snatched as much time alone with our instruments as we could, wandering off into corners of the beautiful concert chamber to explore them further. I was lucky and stayed on the stage, soaring through some of my daily Bach Suites and filling the room with their sound on this lovely cello.

Walking on and off the stage carrying such precious cargo was a daunting prospect and one had to just forget and treat it like any other concert. There was a heart-stopping moment though when Daniel stepped on the hem of my dress and I had to take the snap decision to keep walking as any hesitation could have caused a catastrophic domino effect! Luckily all was well. By the time we had climbed up and down the steps to the stage so many times I was ready to give the cello back, thankful that it had survived in my hands. My original plan to have another farewell play before handing it over felt too much like tempting fate and I gladly returned it to its guardian, who lost no time in locking them all away safely.

When one considers the accumulated value of four such pristine instruments which were made as a collection therefore not one of them can afford to be damaged or lost, the mind boggles. But how wonderful that the Royal Palace is so willing and happy to celebrate them by having them played regularly by the lucky few.

St Georges Bristol

We've just finished for the year - our last concert for 2010 was in one of our favourite venues and second home, St Georges in Bristol. As always here the audience was warm and open to anything - we've brought them all our off-the-wall projects as well as most of the mainstream repertoire over the years - but lots of people emailed saying they'd like to know exactly what we played as they didn't always catch the title or composer from our announcements. So here's a list of what we and the wonderful Diana Baroni performed:

Hanacpachap Cussicuinin - Trad. Peruvian hymn

La Selosa - Trad. Peru (arr. Paul Cassidy)

Una Madre Comio Asado - Osvaldo Golijov (arr. Paul Cassidy)

Impresiones de la Puna - Alberto Ginastera

Puente de los Suspiros - Chabuca Granda (arr. Quito Gato)

The Anchor Song - Bjork (arr. Paul Cassidy)

Tenebrae - Osvaldo Golijov

           Interval

La Oracion del Torero - Joaquin Turina

Around the Canela Flower - Gerardo Gandini

Maria Lando - Chabuca Granda (arr. Quito Gato)

Unravel - Bjork (arr. Paul Cassidy)

Prayer of the Heart - John Taverner

Fragile - Sting (arr. Paul Cassidy)

After the last few weeks of nearly getting caught in snow-bound airports or motorways but always narrowly escaping, we're gad to be home before the forecast arrival of more arctic weather in the UK. Looking forward to the new year which kicks off with a performance at the Royal Palace in Madrid, playing on four Strads which will be released from their vault for the occasion! Can't wait!

Enjoy the holiday season. Somehow, once you accept the trauma of actually embarking on a trip like Oz it’s kind of what travelling’s all about. A bit of suffering and endurance albeit ‘lying back’ with your feet up watching telly.

Now then, back to that night in Lucerne. I have to admit to being just a wee bit smug when I think back to how we three dealt with that rather extreme situation. While most of the other passengers were standing transfixed to the screen, trying to take in the full consequences of the word ‘cancelled’ Jacky, Ian and myself had dispersed at speed in three different directions; Ian to Easyjet (the short straw!), Jacky to the train station and me to car hire. Our main concern, apart from not getting home, was our luggage. Remember,we had checked in and our bags (unusually, because we were going home) had all our music from the trip inside. We needed that music for the upcoming week’s work. Still, we decided to forge ahead, try to get home somehow and deal with the luggage situation later.

Incredibly, as I ran through the baggage area on my way to carland I noticed out of the corner of my eye a uge pile of bags just lying there in a heap; not on a belt or in a wagon, just there on the floor, abandoned. I decided to have a very quick look and, would you believe it. found all three bags after some hunting. I threw them on a trolley and continued on my way hugely relieved if somewhat perplexed as to what on earth those bags were doing there!!!

Ian called in...nothing happening with Squeasy, Jacky too, drew a blank at the train station so it was down to me. The first three companies I tried had cars but were charging €400 plus €2000 to drop in Calais......Wow! Even, considering the nightmare of staying in Zurich and probably going through hell the next day, this seemed like, really a lot of dosh! The nice, soon to be absolutely wonderful lady at National/Alamo was just pulling down the shutter as I landed on her counter, in a state begging her to have a quick look to see if she might have a car available with French plates........she, seeing the state I was in, duly complied. Never have I been so happy to accept a Citroen ( you know. One of those rather weird looking things with no dashboard other than a vastly over-sized speedometer and a push-button handbrake...too creepy). The price €385 all-in. The only French car in the building that night. I called the others, we piled into our funny little Apolleau space moblie and set sail a la vitesse. As we exited the airport we hit solid traffic sitting stationary in the rain for over an hour/ Eventually the accident debris got cleared and armed with Minstrels, M&M’s and Revels pulled into Calais just in time to see the 06.40 head north to Blighty.

We managed to get ourselves on the next freight boat (lorry driver’s b’fasts !!), hire the last car in Dover (train exhorbitant), drop Ian at home and still get home for coffee. What an escape!

One can’t help wondering, with all the emphasis on security these days; how were we able to check in bags, find them lying abandoned and then just leave the building with them without a word.....had we been somewhere a bit less laid-back maybe...!!!!!

You can imagine, going to Valencia two days later was a bit of a worry. Particularly because the old cloud was playing ‘hide-and-seek’ over the Iberian Peninsula. Incredibly, you can’t fly direct, London-Valencia these days; potentially, double-trouble.

Anyway, it all passed smoothly apart from leaving it so late that we almost didn;t get to eat....In Valencia!! Great to play with our old pal, Joan Lluna again and to be in Valencia again. We have watched that amazing city grow over the last thirty years and remain very attached to it. Maria Angeles, our mercurial Spanish agent reminded us of days gone by there; performing nine concerts in one season and over a ten year period performing all Shostakovich, all Bartok, all Schubert and pretty much, all the 2nd Viennese School. Happy days.

Golly-gosh, these blogs are tricky to keep on top of !

After another lovely Cadogan concert, this time with the very amazing Martin Roscoe, we find ourselves back in Sweden. Now Mats, our local manager, heard we were arriving on 30th April with the kids and got very excited; he was adamant that under no circumstances should we miss the great Swedish Festival which annually marks the arrival of Spring (ooops, already forgotten the name). There would be bonfires and bbqs, choirs singing and bands playing in every town and village throughout the land. Never ones for missing out on such excitements we changed to a earlier flight, got the kids out of school earlier than planned and drove like maniacs to the far S/W of Sweden (Skane) so as not to miss even the very first spark of the joyous, life-affirming, pagan-like ritual. We found the beautiful little house in the woods that was to be our home for the next few days but spent no time there at all; staying only long enough to deposit our instruments and cases before dashing at break-neck speed to the centre of town where a sizeable crowd had indeed gathered in anticipation. Sure enough, a brass band duly arrived decked out in full regalia and out in the extremely picturesque river we could clearly see what was either 'Beaversville' or the makings of a bonfire. Now I agree it was silly of me to imagine at this point, Pete Postlethwaithe taking charge of the Black Dykes and Sylvia Kristel swinging over the rapids with a flaming torch between her teeth, in a costume that would embarrass Lady Ga-Ga but........... In truth, some town burgher lit the fire which practically burnt-out before the band had warmed their tubes! The whole thing lasted about 15mins whereupon the crowd dispersed never to be seen again.

We sneaked off to a little pizza place and finished the evening with an Irish Coffee (decaf!) in a nice little place overlooking the river.

Skinnskatterburg ( or Skin-the-cat, Skinny-dipping etc......as you like) is pretty remote by any standards (have a look if you don't believe me). We flew 2hrs north and drove another 3hrs at least through beautiful, barren landscape before we finally arrived at this charming little village by a lake. Could we find our venue??? Could we 'eck! We asked as many people as we could find but were met with blank looks. Could it be our impeccable Swedish?? surely not.....might there be another Skinnygoat?? Surely not..... Turned out , the place we were playing was actually in a place to small to even name on the itinerary; Uttersburg (or un-Uttersburg, it occured to us). It was a further 9km into nowhere but boy, was it worth the effort. Situated next to what looked like a fantastic salmon river was a small group of buildings (kind of manor house with outbuildings) that had been brilliantly converted into an artistic haven. One house, our 'dressing room' was actually a printing press and another housed a wonderful cafe, charming gallery with fascinating exhibition and upstairs, a gorgeous, intimate performing space. All around was an outdoor sculpture-park an then nothingness for miles and miles........extraordinary.

What an evening we passed there; cut short unfortunately because we had to drive back to 'civilisation' for somewhere to stay. Uttersburg had become that place which jumps up and bites you and leaves an unexpected mark on your memory. We all agreed how much we would love to return there and maybe next time spend a bit more time.

You know how you usually find out that your luggage has been lost when you arrive at your destination...well, here's a first. Anyway, upon arrival, poor old Ian heads off to see what he can conjure up between the ski-shops, farmer's outfitters, liederhosen etc.
Come concert time he actually looked rather fetching though we couldn't decide whether the goggles were a good idea or not.

We were playing this Mend. 6tet for vln, 2vlas,(yes, 2vlas... Ian opted for the dark goggles in the end!) cello, dble bass and piano (Piers Lane and Leon Bosch). So nice for us to sometimes have extras around to chat with provide some much-needed entertainment. The promoter there is an old friend of ours, Roland Jorg, or Van the Man as we call him due to his uncanny resemblance. He's a wonderful guy with a taste for single malt. We were all remarking how much we like the inimitable cosiness provided by those wood-panelled, perfectly sealed eateries you find in Austrian/Swiss villages.

Next day we headed for Sweden (only we 4). We returned to the rather amazing hall in Uppsala which we helped open a couple of years ago. Mats, our agent up north, met us at the airport, set us up with a spanking, top of the range Volvo (or is that Borbo!?) and we were off.

One of the features of this venue is the rather extraordinary and somewhat terrifying escalator which goes from foyer to roof, Thorpe Park style; beautifully lit and enticing. A very charming young man served us dinner in the roof-top green room. The first leg of our '10 Swedish experience was looking good!

Wonder what the chances are, statistically speaking, of turning up to Loughborough Uni. with the wrong music? Anyway, I managed to contribute to it; turning up with Op.95 instead of Shost 8. Now, in days gone by, I'd have been faced with getting in touch with home and getting someone to cut up my precious part of S8, faxing it ..... indeed, not that long ago, I'd have been at the mercy of local music shops, libraries or poor unsuspecting musicians living in the area. These days though; I call upon the services of my 14yr old who scans the music to my laptop whereupon I can simply print it off. All in a matter of minutes!! Amazing!
We had a really fun time with a bunch of local school kids before the show. They were all into music and had been brought along to our reh by a charming and enterprising teacher. If only there was a bit more of that sort of thing. School kids should be given free access to all concerts etc. in my opinion.

March 7th. Had such a lovely time in Hove. Gorgeous spring day with sun splitting the sky, even the Channel was blue and those hugely impressive white houses were at their very best. Gavin Henderson came along; always nice to see him and we played Bridge (local lad) Britten, Ravel in the round. Also fun. Snapped my Astring on last page but battled on. Even managed to do the encore without it. Had a lovely lunch afterwards with family and our old pal Stephen Clarke, who's pretty much family anyway. Then sat on the beach, walked the pier, kids did very terrifying rides while we fed 10ps into those infernal machines. Watched the sun set, had tea and drove home listening to Sophie Hits Seven......hmmm, ace.

Friday 19th March. Some of us did a little session this morning for an album by the well-known Fishermen's Friends ....... what, you hadn't heard of them?? Really lovely bunch of Cornish fishermen who get together post trawl and sing their hearts out. Check out the main man who makes Lee Marvin sound like Britney. (hmmm, on reflection....)
By the way, some of us also played on the latest Peter Gabriel cd 'Scratch my Back'. That's a very beautiful and powerful album. No drums or electrics but our good friend, John Metcalfe's gorgeous arr.s make up for that.

Anyway, later that evening we head off to Bilbao on Vueling. Nice airline but they managed to lose my and Jacky's suitcase leaving us with no alternative but to scoot off to the local Dominguez store at a pace (only for concert dress material of course!). On arrival, found it was the last day of their rather superb sale. Called Daniel and Ian and all but emptied the store, as you will see should you attend a gig anytime soon. Concert hall was right next to the famous Transporter Bridge. There's only one other in the world and guess where it is ........ Middlesbrough !! Yes. True home of the BQ. Jacky and Ian got very emotional. Daniel and I did our best.

Cello seat! - pronounced "jealousy" (of musicians with small instruments)

Last week we took 6 flights in three days to perform in three different countries. Seasoned travelers wouldn't flinch at such an itinerary, but cellists will be seeing the writing on the wall. Reporting to departures with a cello destined for a seat in the cabin almost always causes check-in staff to go into headless chicken mode and start making endless phone calls to mysterious hidden beings within the airport. BA are supreme at this - frequently finding that their system has registered the ticket as unpaid-for and demanding on-the-spot payment regardless of our assertions that we have already paid (through the nose). On Tuesday this led to my not being allowed to fly with them - by the time they were ready to take my second payment for the seat it was too late to go through. With a connecting flight in Rome to Sicilly this made my day rather complicated... luckily Alitalia were able to accommodate me and my bulky friend via Milano (for the price of a whole new ticket of course), but for a while there the concert was in jeopardy, all for a flaw in BA's ticketing system. I do wish they'd sort it out.
(Note to cellists - BA have finally joined the real world and changed their in-seat securing procedure of said instrument to a simple extension seatbelt instead of the previously prescribed 5 kilometers of blue nylon rope which we would have to spend the entire flight unravelling if we were to have a chance of leaving the plane on arrival before it took off again!) (Further note to cellists - Ryanair have finally come clean with their actual attitude to our vulnerable cargo: the official line is "Sod off and find another airline, we can't be bothered with cellos"). ("Oh, but we'll happily sell the seats to your fiddling comrades".)

I do love to fly unencumbered... it happens all too rarely but makes a holiday all the more glorious.

The rest of the trip went smoothly and we enjoyed the diversity of climates and venues from one night to the next - Palermo's grand Opera House to Herisau (Switzerland) and its tiny intimate chamber room to the fabulous acoustic of the Auditorio in Madrid. All three were a treat. The week ended with a long-awaited glimpse of some beautiful spring weather and a trip to the seaside for Brighton's Old Market Trust music society and a tribute to Frank Bridge. Being the weekend, the kids came too and we followed the concert with a ride on the Pier ghost train and munched doughnuts as the sun set over the glittering sea.

Just going back to Crumb for a minute. Jacky just reminded me that on 13th Sept. 1993 (my b'day) we were playing 'Death and the Maiden' // Black Angels in Sydney (that's a prog we played often; indeed we recorded it). Just before the concert she had received a phone call to say that my dad had died. Thankfully, she didn't tell me till afterwards. How on earth did I manage to forget that little event when cataloguing the BA stories???

Much as I like Canterbury, do I want to spend the night there, unplanned and potentially in my car (albeit with a view of the glorious cathedral)? I don't think so. The writing was on the wall I suppose. We were making our way gently towards the wonderful Uni of Kent; purveyors of doctorates to the great and good (and not so!). It was a rare moment in this hellish winter that has followed the not too clever summer - the sky was clear and blue, the sun practically warm causing us to peel off one or two of the outer layers; then, there in front of us, a bizarre, post- apocalyptic sight. It was the blackest sheet of cloud you've ever seen which had draped a 'curtain' of sleet/snow/hailstones across the Kentish countryside. Sounds somewhat over-dramatic I know but we were actually scared as the car carried us relentlessly into the unknown. Almost instantly we went from the bright clarity of the drive thus far to an eerie darkness where visibility was down to a few metres. The outside temp. went from +5 to -3 in a matter of seconds. We went from being Toad of Toad Hall to being Dennis Quaid in a scene from 'The Day After Tomorrow'.

The show must go on of course and many brave people battled hard to make the concert a success (Jacky's sister, Janet and her husband Tony who live in C, got in the car and proceeded to slip-slide down their street straight into a taxi that had found itself stranded sideways in the middle of the road. Within seconds another car got in on the act and pirhouetted into them. This car turned out to be carrying 4 people also bound for our concert, so in that moment we lost 6 audience members!!!); we had a lovely time there, as always but then...... The scene that greeted us as we left was frankly comical. there were abandoned vehicles everywhere, just left where they ended up. Taxis were parked up and down the road, refusing to go any further, their charges left to fend for themselves; at one point, a young man came running up the middle of the road waving his arm hysterically shouting," don't try to go any further. You cannot go down there, you don't stand a chance....... !!!!!" It took us half an hour to complete the 3 min winter olympic preview course and get off the campus. Another 20 mins took us to the M2 and a welcome return to sanity. Were we in Whistler or Thomsk ?? No. We were in the 'Garden of England' !!!!

ps No-one was hurt in the making of this blog!

Our residency at the RSAMD is really beginning to take shape now. We just had our most successful trip to date. The students there are starting to understand and love this chamber-music lark. Also managed to fill the hall with Prok 2/Bart 6 on Friday lunchtime which was most heartening. Wed night some of us hit the Wee Curry House (not for the first time!!) hmmmm... excellent. It was -7degrees and snowing so I simply had to have the chilli, coriander, ginger King Prawn dish. Isn't life a ... Next night Me and J went to the cinema and saw The Road. Bloomin' 'eck! Brilliant film but not if you have kids a few hundred miles away. Extremely harrowing. The entire packet of Revels went very quickly.
After our lunchtime on Fri we had a very scary encounter with a somewhat deranged and horribly aggressive taxi-driver but still managed to make the 2.30 train to Kendal where we played that night (Courtney Pine and co were in the next hall/dressing room) at the Brewery Arts Centre. Lovely little place actually and good crowd. We were halfway through the second piece when Jacky's stand began to slowly tilt forward eventually causing her music to fall to the floor. We kept playing for a short time but when it was obvious that no-one from the audience was about to get involved we stopped and Daniel rectified the situation. I suggested to the audience that this had been a clear case of 'brewer's droop' ..... not sure how well that went down but i'm afraid I found it irresistible.

Had a fun Thai meal; then whilst waiting for the cab, bumped into some rather worse-for-wear local lads and lasses clutching bottles of rose. They were complaining that there was nothing for them to do but drink and that because of their appearance everyone was on their case. We suggested that they looked perfectly normal and should have spent at least part of their evening down at a different brewery listening to Beethoven and stuff ...... not sure there'll be much change next Friday though. Nice kids .

Like an idiot I managed to catch the end of Jaws2, Fish Called Wanda and White Mischief before collapsing at some unearthly hour. Got the first train home and found ourselves next to two trainspotters on their way to Royston. They had this extraordinary file full of mind-boggling diagrams of the national grid etc. At one point they nearly knocked each other out in a desperate attempt to be the first to see a particular signal-box that we were about to pass...... Now I love trains and all but ..... mind you, if they were to attend one of our rehearsals they might well think the same of me (just different anoraks really!!).

Had such fun doing In Tune the other day. Sean is just amazing and since they've gone up-market studio-wise it's become an even more pleasurable experience (Jacky now has her own podium instead of the old coffee table of yesteryear!!). Got so many comments about the Tanaka; that piece really gets to people which is nice.

Went back to Kings Place to take part in a celebration of Maxwell-Davies' music. What a hall that is; surely the best acoustic in London. The whole building is fantastic of course. The brain child of the inspired Peter Millican. Lovely to catch up with Peter, Max and Colin..... get some new swan-recipes!!!

Did our third and final concert as part of the excellent 'Migrations' series in Bristol. The audience at St Georges is so impressive. We almost filled the place for quite an uncompromising prog. We had a great evening except that I pulled my A string off the instrument getting a tiny bit carried away during the cello cadenza of Bartok 6 ... all Jacky's fault of course for playing like that!!

Speaking of Jacky. She had a bit of a brain-wave there because there is always the dilemma after those shows.. does one go to a restaurant or head for home!? Anyway, inspired by our experience in Eindhoven last month she ordered a take away to be delivered to St G for after the concert. I can tell we're going to be doing more of that from now on.

In Naples we stayed in the King's former hunting lodge (the proprieter was a charming chap with a very impressive collection of ....... hand-grenades!) and played in his summer palace (figured out why he only went there in the summer..... bloomin' freezin'!!)

Someone told Ian after the concert that Portici (that's where we played) is the third most densely populated place on Earth. Hard to believe but there were a lot of people at our gig many of whom chatted their way through the whole thing in old Italian style. 'Tis somewhat annoying that, having travelled all that way and it's op59/1!!! It's not that they're not enjoying it (we had to do encores) it's just their way. Very delicious sea-bass dinner in front of the Milan derby. Limoncelli on the house..... brill.

Now then. Off to Potton Hall in Suffolk for three days to make our first cd with Daniel. Really excited. It's pretty perfect there; miles from anywhere. Lovely big barn with wonderful acoustic and the very excellent Jeremy Hayes and Patrick Allen to guide us. Recording is tough; very long days of relentless pressure. Still, Helen's mum's soups, the deer outside the window and the Manchester derby got us through it........ ok, and a little bit of Adnams !

SO lovely to be back in Valencia. Scene of so many amazing memories for us over the years. Can't think of a better way to start any year of concerts.
What's most perplexing is that a city like V which has grown so enormously in so many ways over the last 20 yrs doesn't really have direct flights to anywhere outside Spain anymore....weird! We had to go via Madrid ; we're finding the same problem for Bilbao next month.... bit of a bore.
Almost got stuck in Madrid too as another snow shower over here closed Stansted, Luton and Gatwick. Luckily we were coming into LHR so eventually got home. Seriously need an extended and glorious spring and summer now asap!!

It was great to see M@(our unique manager) and our old pals , Peter and Carla Taylor from the BC days. Excellent meal too which is always important. In a little place not long open; just under the Holiday Inn.

Big prog we did there; 59/1 in first half. Woweee.... is there a better quartet than that?? I'm not sure there is you know.

Our slightly odd friend was there in the front row as always. He's an extraordinary guy. He's been to every concert we've ever done in Valencia (that's got to be at least 30); same seat; never moves; never applauds; never smiles; Rather unnerving actually.

Had forgotten what a great hall Eindhoven is. Bit odd-looking but superb acoustic. It was bloomin' freezing there. Main problem is that unless you're into Big Macs it's vert tricky finding something to eat after the show. Anyway, luckily I remembered this little Indonesian place just opp. the stage door. It's up a flight of stairs and they're very nice in there. I managed to get them to stay open for us. Then, during the course of the evening, something happened which made it impossible for them to stick around so rather than leave us in the lurch, we came off stage to find an amazing buffet awaiting us in the green room with beers, wine, the lot. They had prepared it all and brought it over by hand. Lovely example of Christmas Spirit. Fantastic!!

Oh, while we were there we met a quartet and singer who are about to do something in the region of 22 concerts in Holland of a theatrical version of the Juliet Letters ..... more of that anon.

oh crumbs

The other day, got a call from Andrew (as in Haveron) saying that he (bbcso) was doing some work with George Crumb and when he mentioned having played Black Angels with us many times George said that he'd love to meet us. So, Jacky and I tootled off to the Barbican on Fri eve to see him and catch a bit of the dress reh. it was lovely seeing A again and all our pals in the orch; Martin Brabbins (an old friend ) was conducting, so that was nice but what a treat to finally meet the man himself. Black Angels is a piece that we've spent a lot of time on over the last 30years. He very kindly enthused to us that when our cd suddenly appeared on his doorstep, out of the blue back in '94, he was rather worried in that he had not been involved in the recording or learning process but that he had been blown away by it and that it remains his favourite recording of that work. As we talked we remembered and regaled him with some stories to do with performing BAs. Here are four.

Once in Dartington while Maxwell-Davies was still running it we gave a performance where the sound-man (provided by them not us) had a little power surge of his own and as we began to play (it's marked 'as loud as poss') he turned the volume up to max (forgive the pun!).... the ensuing noise was absolutely unbearable..... the hall pretty-much cleared of people and rumour has it that poor old Max was physically sick.

BAs is a bit of a nightmare to perform principally because the promoters always have trouble getting it right and finding all the things required. One of the worst was an outing at the Berlin Festival in the Philharmonie. We arrived to find no tam-tams, dble-bass bow, etc.... we were still in the public bar finding and tuning glasses at 7.15 with a first half of Smetana's 'from my life' starting at 7.30 !!!! Not ideal I can assure you.

In the early '80s while we were still resident quartet at Sutton Place we did the exact same prog on Fri 13th July (the anniversary of it's completion). At this performance the first half was done as usual but when the audience retired for their customary glass in the interval they were greeted by the butlers dressed in capes with vampire teeth and serving Bull's blood. Upon their return they found the four of us in position, stony-faced; the lads had tailcoats etc but no shirts, just white bowties; Jacky had a very full black dress with white bowtie.

As soon as the somewhat perplexed audience had taken their seats we hit a foot pedal which sent the room into complete darkness; then another, which turned on these tiny fluorescent lights whereupon we hit it pretty hard (as loud as is bearable.....). Thanks to the lighting, the audience only saw four white bowties and four bows (the hair). At the end we returned to our motionless, stoney-faced pose and put the main lights back on. The poor audience tried applauding for a while but got no reaction from us so they just gradually got up and left....

Last but not least was the night of 28th June 1998. We finished a performance of the piece in the Barbican at 10pm; went to Upper St where we found a nice table outside; Had a bowl of pasta and a glass of red while watching a World-Cup match, then on to the Whittington Hospital where Celia (our youngest) was born at 3am !!!

Hello there. Given the hopeless infrequency of this silly blog, I don't expect there to be anyone there but if you are, then, Hello !
it's actually, rather surprisingly, been quite a full-on autumn. One full of surprises and mostly very nice experiences.

In Sept. we kicked off on top of the Alps where we stayed in quite the most bizarre hotel ever (still not sure what the building was meant for).

We then turned up in Manchester to do a BBC lunchtime only to realise half and hour beforehand that it wasn't ! Rather annoying given the inevitable fraught build-up to such events but, on the other hand, tremendous relief. Mikes do not bring out the best in me.

Then Jacky and I left a family wedding at 4.30pm, did a very lovely concert in Beverley ( a hidden gem, by the way) and managed to get back for the set-dancing. They even left us something to drink. Next day we did clay-pigeon shooting.... great fun.

Oct. saw us on the Rhine; passing a beautiful, sunny day before, as always, trying in vain to find the Beethovenhaus.

On the 13th we started our 'Migrations' series at St. Georges in Bristol. I cannot imagine life without our regular visits to this amazing hall and now we've found a little Thai place for a quick bite afterwards, it's getting more and more unmissable. The centrepiece of these 3 concerts is Bartok but we're also getting to know more of the music of Golijov..... absolutely wonderful.

15th we brought the Boda Festival to the Cadogan Hall and met the crown-prince of Norway. If Daniel Craig ever decides to move on the Bond people should look no further than this guy !! Played a new piece by Albert Schnelzer (Swedish) ..... not for the last time and all ended up having a great night in a place called Blondes on the Kings Rd that I rather embarrassingly remember being at the opening of back in the '70s.

For some reason we haven't done a BBC for a while (when we thought we were , we were dreaming!) so then, suddenly, like the proverbial 'London-bus', along came not 3 but 4.... in less than a week ! We did the Brahms 5tet with darling Michael Collins (despite someone throwing themselves under our train on the way there) and a fantastic w/e in Derry where we did another premiere (Peter Cowdrey's 'Derrivations') Bartok 1, Ravel, some smaller works and the incomparable Mendelssohn 8tet with the very lovely Badke Quartet. It poured incessantly all w/e but relented on the Mon allowing those of us who stuck around to spend a most memorable day on a perfect beach with a not inconsiderable amount of food and liquid..... magic!

Back to Bristol . Bartok piano 5tet (anyone tempted should contact either myself or poor old Leon McCawley !!!). Amazing work but certainly not for the faint-hearted.

Golijov Clarinet 5tet with Chen Halevi........ mind-blowing.

This was immediately followed by a w/e in St Andrews (not a single ball was struck ! Very difficult for me). Also quite tricky for me was the fact that we went there thinking it was a celebration of Watson Forbes (which it was) only to find that it was a one-off international viola competition with competitors from all over the world and a big-name jury all of whom attended our concert on the Sun aft ....... bit hairy for me and Scott Dickinson but enjoyable nonetheless.

Rsamd visit was fun as always. Lovely staff, lovely students. Went to an awards ceremony which was quite an experience for one who normally runs a mile from such gatherings. This amazing guy turned up to the dinner afterwards and played a thing called a double-pipe... fantastic.

It has to be said that the horrible 'main de Dieu' did spoil an otherwise lovely trip. (oh, and the hotel flooded under the worst rain on record...... interesting aroma).

Now then .... who's been to Morelia ? Our whole time in Mexico was memorable but Morelia has to be the highlight. What an extraordinarily beautiful place. We played an all-British prog with Purcell/Britten 2 and the Elgar piano 5tet with Alexander Pashkov their resident, very excellent pianist. This concert was in one of the many stunning courtyards Morelia has to offer and went out on live TV. Afterwards we enjoyed a delicious meal in the Museum where the great and good had assembled. We were entertained, firstly by a charming ad evocative local, traditional band and then by three guys doing Beatles covers. Sound horrendous but it was actually really moving. They were extremely good and we all dutifully joined in but I couldn't help wondering why a band covering the Beatles would elect to have only three members !!? On the other hand I didn't see their paycheck ...... hope the other three aren't reading this and getting ideas !!!!

Our other two concerts there highlighted the Ravel quartet. In the first half we did, amongst other things, two of our favourite little pieces. Both Mexican. One by Javier Alvarez and the other by his old teacher, Mario Lavista. It was great to see them both again, particularly Javier and his lovely family all of whom we knew very well when they lived in the next street here in London.

After the concert in Zamora we ended up in a restaurant called Sur. We worried slightly when we arrived as we were the only people there but we needn't have. Soon the place filled up, the food and wine was excellent and when the Mariachi band arrived our evening really took off. By 3am we had busked with the locals and ruined everything from the Czardas to Zapateado via Irish songs and goodness knows what else...... Ian was a star ! The night came to a close with a bottle of best Mescal by the pool.

After the show in Mexico City we were invited to the extremely impressive British Ambassador's residence for a terrific evening of chat, nosh and fortification. The 3 Scottish Tenors were there and said goodnight with a gorgeous Burns song. Impressive though the house was, much more impressive was the Ambassador herself. Judith Macgregor is an incredibly kind and inspirational woman. She was an absolute delight and we thank her most warmly for her generosity of spirit. Mexico is lucky to have her around.

Added to this the amazing Susan from the Anglo-Mexican Foundation and our totally wonderful and irreplaceable Daniela who put up with all our little gripes and looked after us with such apparent ease and brilliance ...... we all miss you.

Asta la vista baby!!

Oh dear,
sorry this is not a very interesting blog site. Lots of things have been happening but not much reported on I'm afraid!

Mon. 3rd Aug. Gave a concert in a french cloud... rain that put Derry and M'bro to shame. Then somehow survived horrible food-poisoning (yes, in France!) to do Boda Festival. 8 gigs in 4 days.

It's impossible to imagine what lies in store for one when one goes to a place like Boda (Arctic Norway), especially from the toilet floor but one can usually tell pretty soon upon arrival. We were looked after so beautifully there (so important when you spend your life dandering around the globe). Despite feeling SO terrible and the first concert being 'live' on EBU radio, the whole experience kicked into life with a memorable meal laid on by a most amazing gentleman named Morten. He had been the chairman of the festival for 8 years (irreplaceable I would have thought) and still kept the whole thing alive with his particular brand of extreme generosity. Our ensuing Shost Cycle in 5 different churches became all the lore memorable thanks to him; plying us with his boat trips, fish eagles, fjords, glaciers, fish cakes, champagne, barolo...... unforgettable. The whole Festival comes to London's Cadogan Hall in Oct. Don't miss it.

Off on hols now for a wee while. Will try to write more in the autumn.

Phew!

It's been a huge month, fantastically exciting to be playing with Elvis again and with a lot of new material to explore, as well as revisiting the Juliet Letters 15 years on... Back to Glasgow three more times since the Shostakovich Cycle! With Elvis we returned to the venue which opened the first JL tour back in '93, the Royal Concert Hall, then back to the Academy for the In Memoriam concert with Joan Lluna and some teaching, then a fab outing with the Andalucian Dogs and the brilliant Dawn Upshaw at the extremely hip Indoor Fruit Market at City Halls.
In the meantime the EC tour took us up and down the country, ending at one of our favourite haunts, St George's Bristol, where we played for over three hours, such is the wealth of this man's output and the ever increasing number of arrangements it inspires in us.

The month ends with us learning works new to us - Verdi and Wolf - and a brand new commission from Isadora Zebeljan - all really exciting.

In the meantime, Pip the duck is two months old and huge! She's dipping in and out of her paddling pool-pond as I write and tomorrow she goes to live at our local city farm, to my great relief. After an incredibly busy month of work, the kids having school exams too, she was just one push too far. By this time next week we'll be taking a six day holiday. So last week i had three performances with the school production, Sweet Charity. on the wednesday, they were away, on the thursday, they came! on the friday they were away in... somewhere... saturday and sunday they were in, like, Italy or something and the came back on sunday evening then went again monday morning then came back tonight (tuesday) then tomorrow they're away AGAIN till thursday! We've been left with our schools and granny. Gosh! Anyway, to be fare on them, this is a one-off thing... and they've been warning us about this 'busy month' for ages! Last year, we all went to Australia!! It was soo fun! We met loads of relatives we hadn't even heard of, Celia got bitten by a Koala (and sucked by a leach...arrgggh), and sun burned...ouchy. But it was soo much fu!!! We went to this dolphin wild life resort place called Tangalooma... omg, if you ever go to Ozzy, GO THERE!!!! Every day sees us on another flight to another city with another programme, rock'n roll! Last night was the last concert of our Shost Cycle in Bologna. Daniel was a star.... that being his first S/C. Thankfully we've got a few more coming up in the next couple of years so all that work won't be for nothing. From now on though we're doing them in two days instead of over 6 months !!!!
Glasgow's become a bit of a second home at the moment; The Wee Curry House and Sarti's are keeping us going post gig/teaching. Missed the League Cup Final on Sunday but managed to get on the earlier flight home to see the kids despite the best efforts of a couple of BA jobsworths. SO annoying !!!! Jacky, Ian and I were all at the gate ready to go but.... long story; only I got on. Mind you, missed Kirsty Young who was on the later flight. Was it worth it????

Tomorrow night's Brit 1/ 132 in Madrid which would be great but for the dreaded mike ! 132 on 'live' radio is not my idea of fun. Last Wed we had dinner in a restaurant frequented by the Real players..... it was very quiet for some reason ! Next problem, can we finish next Wed's gig in time for me to get to a screen for Man U v Inter (the return ) ? PAUL.

Imagine this; you're halfway down the last page of Op.59/1 and your 1st violin breaks his/her E string !! aaargh....... what to do. The wonderful Ravel Quartet is the main piece on the cd with a collection of short 20th century works finding inspiration in the similar sound-world of Latin-American and Hispanic rhythms and textures. Look out for it in September, or earlier if you're in Australia as we'll be taking some preview copies along for our concerts there in the coming weeks.
